The tunnel was built in the late 1940s, in the land that was dubbed the "iron land", located at the end of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. During Tet Mau Than 1968 campaign, National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam used this tunnel system to attack
Sai Gon.

Made from rudimentary tools, the tunnel was digged in a clay and laterite area so it has high durability, less prone to landslides. Cu Chi can withstand the destructive power of the military's the biggest bombs. Air was taken in through the tunnel vents. The different areas of the tunnel can be isolated when necessary (gas pump, water pump)

Cu Chi located deep underground from 3-8 meters, height is just enough for a person to go crouched. The first vault is right in edge of the forest, with groundwater wells that was provided water for the entire tunnel area, the wells has a depth of 15 meters. The tunnel system consists of 3 floors, from the "backbone" divided into numerous long branches, short branches and interconnected,
Floor 1 located 3 meters from the ground, against artillery shells and weight of tanks, armored vehicles. Floor 2 located 5 meters, against small bomb. Floor 3, 8-10 meters, completely safety. Road up and down between the basement is arranged by the secret hatch. Above the tunnel is discreetly disguised, looks like termite mounds extrusion and there are vents on the tunnel.
