To travel safely and avoid unfortunate misunderstandings, you should spend some time to learn about the people and the local culture. People generally have instinctive wariness before what they see as dangerous. If you face a situation, a place where you feel unsafe, it's best to avoid it. Your instinct may be right or wrong but not travel alone. Not always people to help you when you get stuck.
